The Pennsylvania Insurance Department and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners are teaming up to encourage consumers to get smart about their insurance coverage during the third annual “Get Smart About Insurance Week,” which starts today and continues until Jan. 23.
“Get Smart About Insurance Week is about educating consumers to be smart insurance shoppers,” Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Diane Koken stated. “The Insurance Department is here to help Pennsylvanians understand their rights and know what to ask when shopping for insurance.”
She pointed out that “insurance is one of the top five expenses in any given household,” but “studies show that many Americans don’t fully understand their coverages or read their policies. Most Americans find peace of mind in having insurance, and a better understanding of their insurance policies will make Pennsylvanians smarter and more knowledgeable about the protections that are in place for them.”
The Insurance Department’s Web site, www.insurance.state.pa.us, offers consumers an opportunity to test their insurance knowledge about automobile, life, health and property insurance with an interactive quiz.
During Get Smart About Insurance Week, the Department said it is encouraging policyholders to:
— Call the Pennsylvania Insurance Department or visit its Web site for free tips and up-to-date information prior to purchasing health, life, auto, home or other insurance coverage.
— Schedule a routine “check-up” with your insurance providers at least once a year. Inquire about the cost benefit of opting for higher deductibles.
— Ask your agent or company specifically about discounts for good driving records, good health, good grades, special education or training.
— Shop around for identical products and services. Not every company charges the same rate.
— Remember that an insurance policy is a legal document – read it carefully.
The Insurance Department has more than 15 consumer brochures dealing with various insurance topics.
