New York Superintendent of Insurance Gregory Serio announced the arrest of a Brooklyn woman who, while working as physician’s assistant at Kings County Hospital Center, reportedly took out a fraudulent $250,000 life insurance policy on a patient who was suffering from kidney failure and hypertension.
Benzena Dosunmu, 56, made herself the policy’s sole beneficiary now and now faces up to 20 years in prison for scheming to defraud.
It is alleged that in September, 2000, Dosunmu took out the policy with the Guardian Life Insurance Company of America and made monthly premium payments until December, 2002.
At this time, the insurance company suspected fraud and contacted the New York State Insurance Department. The Department conducted an investigation and was assisted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, leading to an arrest on July 28, 2004.
