Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr. announced that Baltimore City Police Officer Eric Spilman pleaded guilty to felony insurance fraud.
Spilman had been charged with making fraudulent statements to Progressive Insurance Company in support of an automobile insurance claim. The plea follows a joint investigation conducted by the Insurance Fraud Division of the Maryland Insurance Administration, the Maryland State Police and the Office of the Attorney General.
In a statement of facts presented by the prosecutor, the court learned that Spilman, of Grain Court in Baltimore County, reported to the insurance company that he was driving his vehicle when it was involved in an accident on Feb. 20, 2005.
In fact, his wife, Lori Spilman, who did not have a driver’s license and was excluded from the policy, had been driving the vehicle. The court also learned that Spilman called the other individual involved in the accident and asked her to report to the insurance company that he was the driver.
The Honorable Susan Souder sentenced Spilman to Probation before Judgment.
