A new report is urging sweeping changes to Massachusetts medical malpractice system.
The findings released by Uxbridge State Sen. Richard Moore’s office recommend a malpractice system based on early disclosure to patients, followed by an apology and an offer of compensation.
It said the changes would decrease the number of malpractice cases that end up in court. Some Massachusetts hospitals have already started similar programs.
Massachusetts Medical Society president Dale Magee said the changes echo what doctors have been recommending for years.
But defenders of the existing system said the courts are still the best way to protect patients’ rights.
