Fire Damages Science Building at College Campus in Connecticut

Authorities in Middletown, Connecticut are trying to figure out what started a fire at a science building at Wesleyan University that injured two campus safety officers and a city firefighter.

Officials say the fire at the Hall-Atwater building was reported at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, after a student who was working on a project in a lab left for the night. Another student in a nearby lab smelled smoke and called campus officers.

The two officers suffered minor injuries while trying to put out the fire. They were treated and released from a local hospital. Officials say a city firefighter was treated for minor chemical burns at the hospital and later discharged.

Authorities say a first-floor lab and two nearby rooms were damaged.

The building was closed Monday for inspections.
