Federal regulators have ordered Snapco Inc. to close its mine in Buchanan County, Virginia for failing to pay more than $397,000 in civil penalties.
The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration said Friday the penalties were levied against Snapco for at least 360 violations at its Mine Number 2 in Hurley. MSHA says the company ignored its demand to pay the penalties.
A telephone listed for Snapco in Hurley has been disconnected.
Michael A. Davis, MSHA’s deputy assistant secretary for operations, says the agency warned Snapco that failing to pay the penalties could result in a closure order.
