The New York City Police Department is offering a motorcycle safety course on department time to service members to try to stem the rising number of off-duty officers injured or killed in accidents.
Police say that since 2005, six off-duty members have died while driving motorcycles, and many others have been critically hurt. On Tuesday, an off-duty cop was injured in an accident and underwent surgery. A second off-duty cop was seriously hurt in a July accident, and remains hospitalized with a fractured pelvis. An officer was killed in April after colliding with an automobile.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly says he wants officers to have the best training available to them. He says the NYPD Highway District has great instructors who teach in-depth driving techniques.
