Cause of Pennsylvania Feed Storage Building Blaze Probed

February 16, 2010

Fire investigators will start today to try to find out what sparked a blaze that destroyed a feed storage building at the Cumberland Valley Business Park in central Pennsylvania.

Firefighters from the nearby Letterkenny Army Depot Fire Department say flames were shooting through the roof of the Cargill Animal Nutrition building when they arrived at the blaze, which was reported shortly after midnight Friday. Crews from elsewhere in Franklin County and from Cumberland and Adams counties also fought the flames until well after daybreak.

The 90,000-square-foot building, formerly part of the depot, was leveled by the blaze, with damage estimated at $2 million. Rob Sheffer, Cargill’s regional general manager in Albany, N.Y., says it was used to make feed for dairy farms. He says the company is glad that no one was hurt.
