Earthquake Felt in Eastern Maine

Scientists says the rattling and loud noises reported by people in eastern Maine was from a magnitude 3 earthquake.

No injuries or damage was reported from the Tuesday afternoon quake felt primarily in the Bucksport area.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was reported at 4:42 p.m. Eastern time and was centered seven miles east-northeast of Bucksport.

Alice Kelley of the University of Maine says detection equipment there recorded a 1.1. aftershock about 20 minutes later.

Faith Johnson-Carr of BookStacks on Main Street in Bucksport tells the Bangor Daily News there was a boom and the glass shook.

Scientists rate a magnitude 3 earthquake as “very minor.”

The U.S.G.S says the largest earthquake recorded in Maine was a magnitude 5.1 in 1904.
