Officials say they may never know the cause of a fire that destroyed a former meatpacking plant in Maine’s largest city.
Portland fire officials said Friday that the massive fire at the former Jordan’s Meats plant was likely accidental, but that the cause cannot be confirmed.
Thursday afternoon’s fire sent thick black smoke over downtown and cut power to more than 3,000 customers.
The building has been idle for five years. Crews were in the process of demolishing it so it could be razed to make room for a hotel, restaurant and condominiums.
Portland Fire Chief Fred Lamontagne said there will be no further investigation into the cause.
