A late night fire has destroyed a bell factory in East Hampton, Conn.
Fire officials tell WVIT-TV that the blaze broke out at the Bevin Brothers Manufacturing Co. factory before midnight Saturday. Twenty fire departments helped to bring the blaze under control.
Fire department spokesman Steve Caron tells the station that authorities are trying to figure out if any hazardous materials were inside the building. He says the entire factory was involved in the blaze.
Residents who live nearby were evacuated as a precaution. The cause of the blaze isn’t yet known.
According to the company’s website, Bevin Brothers has been in business for more than 179 years. It bills itself as the only company in the U.S. that solely manufactures bells.
