July 16, 2013

The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation hosted two insurance seminars for legislators on July 10 and 11, 2013, in Philadelphia. The seminars were held during the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL) 2013 Summer Meeting.

A total of 34 legislators from 20 states attended the Insurance 101 seminar on July 10. This seminar was presented by Dr. R. B. Drennan of Temple University and Dr. David Pooser of St. John’s University and covered facts about how insurance works.

“The Insurance 101 seminar provided committee members with useful information on the basic principles of risk management and insurance,” said Rep. Marguerite Quinn of Pennsylvania. “The presenters were able to explain complex insurance concepts in an easy-to-understand, unbiased manner that will help policymakers make informed decisions.”

The second seminar, Distracted Driving: Truth and Consequences, was held on July 11. A total of 50 legislators from 25 states attended this seminar, taught by Dr. Paul Atchley of the University of Kansas.

The distracted driving seminar addressed these topics:

* The risk of distracted driving

* An overview of key studies showing the dangers of distracted driving

* Current attitudes toward distracted driving and solutions to improve safety

* A review of effective policies to reduce risk and barriers to solutions

Rep. Charles Curtiss of Tennessee, who is also president of NCOIL, was pleased to attend the Distracted Driving: Truth and Consequences seminar. “This seminar was extremely insightful and provided relevant, timely information on a very real and dangerous risk that we are all familiar with,” he said. “Through NCOIL’s long-standing partnership with The Griffith Foundation, our members are able to attend these valuable insurance education seminars, which will help many of them earn the NCOIL Institute for Insurance Policy certification.”
