The state fire marshal’s office is investigating what appeared to be explosions that damaged three garbage trucks at Warwick’s public works yard. No one was injured.
Clouds of black smoke filled the air as firefighters responded to the yard off Sandy Lane at about 9 p.m. Saturday. Officials say two other city vehicles were damaged in a fire that broke out after the reported explosions.
Authorities say the cause of the explosions isn’t clear. Officials will be viewing surveillance camera footage to see if it shows what happened.
Firefighters say the gates to the yard were locked when they arrived.
Officials say the three mechanized collection trucks were destroyed and the estimated cost of all the damage could be more than $1 million.
