State environmental officials have assessed nearly $3 million in penalties against a New Jersey company and ordered it to remove an illegal mountain of construction and demolition debris next to the New Jersey Turnpike in Newark.
Officials from The Department of Environmental Protection said Friday the agency issued two enforcement orders this week totaling $2.9 million in penalties against Theodore Fiore and his Newark-based companies, T. Fiore Recycling and T. Fiore Demolition Co.
A company official said there would be no comment and hung up the phone before he could be identified.
The DEP says it has ordered the removal of the pile, which violates guidelines at more than 75 feet high.
The DEP says it is also seeking court intervention to ensure Fiore’s facility comes into compliance.
