Connecticut Rebuts Feds on State Road Conditions

State transportation officials are disputing a White House report that says Connecticut’s public works are in dire condition.

The Republican-American reports that federal officials used data from the American Society of Civil Engineers and said 41 percent of Connecticut’s roads are in poor condition.

The federal report is intended to win congressional support for legislation to put money into the Highway Trust Fund.

State Transportation Department spokesman Kevin Nursick says the agency is paving 264 miles of roads this year at a cost of $71.5 million. In 2013, it paved 240 miles and in 2012, it paved 225 miles.

Nursick says the state also must repair bridges and relieve road congestion.

He says the state doesn’t have the money and work crews to pave every road that needs new asphalt.
