Egypt’s state news agency says an overpass in eastern Cairo collapsed after a fire broke out in a slum settlement underneath it. The collapse killed a policeman.
MENA says the overpass in the populous el-Marg district crumbled when gas cylinders in the shanty town underneath it exploded early on Tuesday.
The accident forced authorities to close several nearby subway stations.
Egypt frequently sees deadly accidents caused by poor management and a decrepit infrastructure, especially over the three years of turmoil following the ouster of autocratic President Hosni Mubarak in the 2011 popular uprising.
