A private bus has plunged off a mountain road into a deep gorge in the Indian portion of Kashmir, killing 17 people and injuring 30 others, police said.
The injured were hospitalized early Tuesday, some with serious injuries. The bus was traveling overnight from Jammu to Srinagar, police officer Rajesh Kumar said.
The cause of the accident was not immediately known.
Accident occurred near Ramban, a town nearly 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Srinagar, Kumar said.
India has the world’s deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
