Iowa’s capital city could see about $800,000 in state flood aid this month, and the city’s mayor wants it to go toward energy-efficient building.
The Des Moines City Council signed off on grant agreements with the state. Mayor Frank Conway says homeowners who get the money should make build with energy-efficiency in mind.
About $685,000 will go to homeowners and another $146,000 will go to businesses hit by record flooding this summer.
The number of homeowners and businesses eligible for the money wasn’t determined.
Assistant City Manager Chris Johansen said the money should be available this month. The city is also seeking another $1.2 million in state and federal dollars for assistance programs.
