Officials at Southern Illinois University say the cost for repairs and clean-up from recent storms at SIU’s Carbondale campus could top $5 million.
Administrators say much of that total will go to fix broken windows and roof damage after the high winds ripped through campus earlier this month. At least $1 million will be spent on clean-up efforts.
Plant Service Operations Director Phil Gatton says at least 1,000 healthy trees were lost in the powerful storm, most of them within Thompson Woods and around Campus Lake. Some of those areas will remain closed due to safety concerns.
SIU’s Agriculture Department took some of the hardest hits. The main building will need at least $300,000 in repairs, and the university farm area lost several assets, including a feed mill used for the dairy, swine and equine centers. A new mill could cost between $200,000 and $300,000.
