An upcoming fire prevention workshop for Kansas’ Emporia State University students is named after two students killed in an October blaze.
Authorities have said 23-year-old Yawai Fan and 22-year-old Zheng Lin died when items lying on the grate of a floor furnace ignited in their off-campus duplex.
Both came to Emporia State from China in the fall semester of 2009. Fan was a sophomore studying for his chemistry degree. Lin was studying for her master’s degree in the Department of English, Modern Languages and Journalism.
The university says the Fan-Lin Fire Prevention Workshop will be Jan. 30 in Webb Hall of the Memorial Union. Firefighters will talk about escape routes and demonstrate how to use safety equipment. The workshop will include a question-and-answer session.
