3 Teens Hurt in Drunken-Driving Simulator Crash

June 21, 2012

Police in northern Indiana say three teenagers and a sheriff’s deputy were hurt when a converted golf cart tipped over during a drunken-driving simulation.

Police say a 14-year-old was driving the cart and over-corrected after taking a turn too hard when the vehicle tipped onto its side Monday evening in the Elkhart County Jail’s parking lot.

WNDU-TV reports the teens and the deputy were treated at hospitals for minor injuries and released. The teens are part of the department’s Explorers program for youths interested in law enforcement careers and those driving the cart wear goggles simulating drunken driving.

Undersheriff Sean Holmes says it doesn’t appear anyone did anything improper and that he considered the crash an accident.

The cart’s windshield was cracked and its canopy damaged.
