University students and others looking for safer housing in Cincinnati, Ohio, can turn to a new city website for a list of apartments or homes that have passed voluntary fire inspections.
Councilwoman Laure Quinlivan says she came up with the idea after a fire killed two University of Cincinnati students on Jan. 1. She says their families and friends pushed for creation of a safe housing list.
The city council approved the program, which allows landlords to call the fire department for a free inspection. Apartments and homes passing the inspection are put on the list, which is available for anyone looking for housing. The website also includes other safety information.
University of Cincinnati officials say the school has at least 4,000 students in off-campus housing.
