PLRB Conf. to Focus on Handling of Claims

March 21, 2003

A record crowd has registered for this year’s Claims Conference & Insurance Services Expo, which will be held March 30 – April 2 at the Dolphin and Swan Hotels at Disney World in Orlando.

More than 3,000 claims industry professionals, presenters and exhibitors will attend the property/casualty claims education conference, which has been produced by the Property Loss Research Bureau (PLRB) for more than 50 years. The Insurance Services Expo, the largest claims-related expo in America, will feature more than 225 exhibits.

“This year, we are increasing our focus on the handling of liability claims,” said PLRB president Thomas Mallin. “About 30 of the educational sessions are geared specifically to casualty claims handling. That’s about three times as many as in prior years, with at least a dozen new liability insurance topics never before addressed at the claims conference. This vast array of information makes this year’s conference America’s most comprehensive curriculum for liability claims professionals – a veritable claims university.

“Not that we are shortchanging those majoring in property claims. With the total number of educational topics increased this year to over 140, there is a wealth of subject matter for students of property claims handling as well.”

Featured presentations at the conference will include:

Asbestos: Liability and Litigation – John Lobert, senior vice president of state government affairs, Alliance of American Insurers, will provide an overview of the asbestos problem and efforts being made to resolve issues related to asbestos litigation.

Catastrophe: Outsource before it Hits – Six industry experts will talk about pre-planning for a catastrophe and negotiating agreements with designated service providers.

Fraud: Confidential – The director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will talk about working with ATF and recognizing recent behaviors and motivations related to insurance fraud.

Mold Strategy Forum – A dozen experts will discuss changes that occurred in the last year and evaluate the marketplace as it relates to mold claims.

In addition, insurance expert Bill Bailey will host his syndicated radio program, It’s Your Money, on the National Radio Network live from the Claims Conference on Sunday, March 30, from noon to 2 p.m.
