A severe weather front fell upon the Southern states inciting a series of strong tornadoes that moved across Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas, wreaking damage and killing at least 48.
As the information of the damage and fatalities reached the presidential candidates, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee reportedly held moments of silence during their speeches in honor of those who were lost.
Emergency officials’ reports of fatalities came in as 24 from Tennessee, 13 from Arkansas, 7 from Kentucky and four from Alabama. The toll is expected to rise.
As the weather system maneuvered east, it brought heavy rains and strong winds to parts of Alabama, and the National Weather Service posted tornado watches in southern parts of Alabama, Georgia and the Florida Panhandle.
Experts think the cooling of the tropical Pacific Ocean known as ‘La Nina’ might be the root of the storms.
