General Motors on Monday announced that it would recall about 3.4 million older large cars for an ignition problem. Plus, the company recalled another 166,000 cars and trucks in five other recalls for a series of other problems.
The recalls bring GM’s total so far this year to 44, covering 20 million vehicles worldwide. In the U.S., GM has recalled more than 17.7 million cars and trucks this year. GM already has beaten its old full-year record of 10.75 million recalled vehicles set in 2004. And a company spokesman said the company is still reviewing its ignition switches to see if there are any more problems.
Here are the latest recalls announced by the company:
– About 3.4 million older large cars in North America because the ignition switches can move from “run” to “accessory.” That shuts off the engines and knocks out power steering and brakes, and that can cause drivers to lose control. GM says the problem happens when people have stuff dangling from their key chains and they hit a big bump. The company will make the hole smaller in the key so things don’t dangle. The recall covers the 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, 2000 to 2005 Cadillac Deville, 2004-2011 Cadillac DTS, the 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, the 2004 and 2005 Buick Regal LS and GS, and the Chevy Monte Carlo from the 2006 through 2008 model years. Until repairs are made, GM is telling owners to remove everything from key chains and run cars only with the ignition key.
– About 69,000 Cadillac ATS sports sedans from the 2013 and 2014 model years, and another 22,000 Cadillac CTS sedans, all with automatic transmissions. The shift cable can come loose and drivers may not be able to shift the cars out of gear. No crashes or injuries reported.
– More than 57,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups from the 2015 model year. Power steering pump hoses may detach and fluid can spill, causing loss of power steering and power brakes. Dealers will inspect the hose clamps and make sure they’re secured.
– Nearly 17,000 2011 Cadillac CTS sedans from the 2011 model year with all-wheel-drive. A gasket can leak and cause a rear drive shaft to come loose, bumping the vehicle floor and setting off a rollover sensor that inflates roof air bags. GM knows of 15 unintended air bag deployments but says injury data is unclear.
– 712 Chevy Corvettes with competition sport seats from the 2104 model year. An unbelted child and door trim can block the passenger seat side air bag vent. Dealers will add a redesigned air bag.
-184 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups from 2014 and 2015 with vinyl floors and all-weather floor mats purchased with the vehicles. Mats can slip under the driver’s feet because the floors have no attachments to keep them in place. Customers should take the mats to their dealers for a refund.
