The 2024 hurricane season presented challenges for insurers thanks largely to hurricanes Beryl, Helene, and Milton—the three powerful storms caused more than $138 billion in damage as well as $52 million in insured losses.
Nearmap, an aerial imagery and location intelligence system provider, analyzed 7.5 million properties linked to the three hurricanes.
The analysis shows more than 484,107 properties were impacted, 98,443 properties suffered severe damage and 5,193 properties were completely destroyed.
The storms yielded massive losses of property and produced large numbers in terms of insured and total losses.
Five hurricanes (Debby, Beryl, Francine, Helene, and Milton) made U.S. landfall in 2024, and two (Helene and Milton) were major hurricanes. Total estimated losses from the hurricanes are likely to be between $25.5 billion and $68.5 billion.
Hurricane Helene was considered one of the most destructive natural disasters of 2024, resulting in an overall loss of $56 billion and $16 billion from insurers. Hurricane Milton insured losses totaled $25 billion with a total loss of $38 billion.
Nearmap analyzed 1.7 million properties in the area of Hurricane Beryl and found: 118,143 properties were impacted, 16,082 properties were damaged or worse and 539 properties were destroyed.
Nearmap analyzed 3.8 million properties in the area of where Hurricane Milton struck. The company found: 234,960 properties were impacted, 39,009 properties were heavily damaged and 1,074 properties were destroyed.
The company analyzed 2 million properties in the area of where Hurricane Helene hit the southeastern area, finding: 131,004 properties were impacted, 43,352 properties suffered severe damage and 3,580 properties were destroyed.
