Hangar with Ammunition Destroyed at Oklahoma Airport

A fire at a small Tulsa airport has destroyed an airport hangar where ammunition was being stored, but no injuries are being reported.

Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Gary Tarver says firefighters from Tulsa and Jenks responded to a call of an explosion at Jones Riverside Airport in southwest Tulsa about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. He says they extinguished the fire before it spread to other structures.

Authorities say there were no airplanes in the hangar but that the ammunition being stored in the hangar apparently exploded in the fire, forcing firefighters to keep their distance. Tarver says firefighters found some 50 mm casings in the burned-out hangar, which has numerous bullet holes.

He says authorities are investigating the cause of the place and why ammunition was stored in the hangar.
