A $1.2 million settlement has been reached between the Roman Catholic Diocese of Corpus Christi and three men who say they were sexually assaulted by a priest while altar boys in the 1970s.
The lawsuit, filed more than a year ago, was settled Tuesday. It accuses Monsignor Hugh Clarke of sexually assaulting the men from 1972 to 1975 in the church rectory and school while he was associate pastor at Christ the King Church. Clarke died in 2002.
Tom Rhodes, an attorney for the men, told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that it’s been “a long and difficult struggle” but “they feel vindicated.”
Church officials released a statement urging prayer for all affected and said the diocese strives to ensure a safe environment in all of its parishes and work places.
