The Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana says a 22-year-old Gulf Island Fabrication employee died when he was hit in the head by a cable that came loose while moving metal sheet piling.
The Courier reports that Mark Naquin of Montegut was pronounced dead late Monday.
Deputies say Naquin was among workers moving the pilings, which weigh about 700 pounds each, but nobody else was hurt.
The death has been classified as an accident.
Gulf Island makes offshore rigs and drilling platforms in Houma.
Its president and chief operating officer, Kirk Meche, says the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been called to investigate, a requirement in all fatal workplace accidents.
