The Florida Department of Financial Services, after filing Administrative Complaints, has revoked the insurance licenses of a husband-and-wife insurance agent team, following charges that they sold worthless health insurance.
Investigators with the Bureau of Agent and Agency Investigation say Fred James Magiera and Claudine Diane Magiera, both non-resident agents, were actually operating from a residence in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
The couple reportedly sold health coverage being offered by Nevada-based Employer’s Mutual, a company not authorized to sell insurance in Florida, to at least nine consumers in early 2001. Employer’s Mutual was ordered by the Department to cease operations in Florida in August of 2001. Employer’s Mutual has also been placed under the control of a Federal Court-appointed independent fiduciary.
A Deerfield Beach couple reportedly incurred more than $250,000 in unpaid medical bills after having purchased health coverage from the Magieras. In Greenacres, another couple was left with $30,000 in medical debt.
Fred Magiera has been licensed in Florida as a nonresident life and health agent since 1993, and Claudine Magiera has been licensed as a nonresident life and health agent since 1991, although both reportedly maintained Florida home and business addresses.
