North Carolina Charges Man Involved in 36 Crashes with Insurance Fraud

North Carolina officials have arrested an Indiana man and charged him with allegedly filing more than $10,000 in false claims related to 11 crashes between December 2005 and June 2008.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin announced the arrest of Jonathan Christian Jones of Marion, Indiana.

According to a report from the N.C. Department of Transportation, Jones was involved in a total of 36 crashes between April 2000 and January 2007.

Acting on a tip from the NCDOT, insurance investigators began a year long investigation that also involved the N.C. Highway Patrol and the Lumberton and Pembroke police departments, according to Goodwin’s office.

In addition to 11 counts of insurance fraud, Jones is also charged with one count of obtaining property by false pretense and nine counts of assault with a deadly weapon, according to officials, who said he was previously arrested in June and charged with one count of insurance fraud. He has been placed under a $20,000 secured bond.

Officials said an estimated 10 cents of every dollar paid in premiums goes toward the payment of fraudulent claims.
