More than 200 of Kentucky’s 1,000 dams are considered high hazards threatening property, people, and animals if breached. This is according to a recent report, “The Cost of Rehabilitating our Nation’s Dams,” published by the Association of Dam Safety Officials.
According to Marilyn Thomas, environmental engineer consultant for the Dam Safety Branch of the state’s Division of Water, Kentucky needs $1.5 million to cover repairs to public dams. Private dams remain the owner’s responsibilities.The report stated the needs are evenly split between private and public dams.
