Records show that more than a $1 million has been paid out since 2005 in claims against a South Florida police department.
The city of Fort Lauderdale released a list of claims and payouts in response to a public records request by the Sun Sentinel.
The newspaper reports that since 2005, more than 300 claims have been filed about Fort Lauderdale police officers losing or damaging property, improperly towing vehicles or making frivolous and illegal arrests.
The city rejected most of the claims. The claims that were settled added up to roughly $1 million in taxpayer dollars. The largest payout was more than $171,000 after a judge found no probable cause for an arrest.
The newspaper reports that car crashes resulted in another $1.8 million in settlements and judgments.
