California Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi announced the arrest of insurance broker Mindy Elizabeth Latorre, 34, of Lincoln, Calif., for 58 felony counts of grand theft, forgery and insurance fraud. She was booked at the Placer County Jail on $500,000 bail.
Latorre was arrested on August 11 by the Roseville Police Department after a search warrant was conducted by California Department of Insurance (CDI) investigators at both Latorre’s residence and her insurance office. The felony complaint stems from a two and a half year investigation conducted by the CDI’s Investigation Division.
Latorre owns and operates Latorre Insurance Services located in Roseville. The investigation revealed that she allegedly collected insurance premiums from clients, used the money for her own personal benefit, and failed to remit the premiums to insurers. Furthermore, she is also accused of issuing bogus insurance policies to her clients, deceiving them to believe they had legitimate insurance coverage.
The criminal complaint alleges that between April 2003 and June 2006, she collected more than $116,000 in insurance premiums from her clients and diverted the funds to her own personal use. The lines of insurance included: commercial general liability, commercial property, workers’ compensation and commercial automobile insurance.
The Placer County District Attorney’s office is prosecuting the case.
