Federal officials say Scolari’s Warehouse Markets in Reno, Nev. have agreed to pay $425,000 to 19 women who say they were sexually harassed and retaliated against by supervisors at several local stores.
However, Scolari’s Food & Drug Company, the Sparks, Nev.-based business that operates 19 stores in Northern Nevada and California, denies the sexual harassment claims.
It said it settled the suit because a trial would be “too disruptive to the many Scolari’s associates scheduled to testify.”
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a federal lawsuit against the company in 2004. The EEOC claimed some Scolari’s managers verbally harassed the women, touched them inappropriately and made lewd comments.
As part of the settlement, Scolari’s has agreed to provide training to all employees and submit reports to the EEOC concerning its employment practices.
