Idaho State University officials say the huge letter “I” that serves as a landmark at the top of a hill in Pocatello is posing safety concerns to hikers.
The Idaho State Journal reports the university’s facilities department completed a study earlier this year after people raised safety concerns about the letter, and found that erosion and soil instability means the “I” could slip and harm people hiking the trail that leads past the landmark.
ISU President Arthur Vailas says the university is reviewing several recommendations on how to preserve the history of the school while resolving any safety issues. For now, the trail leading to the “I” has been closed. The options under consideration include repairing the “I” and trail, or replacing the landmark.
