California officials have fined a steel company nearly $37,000 in connection with the death of a worker at the site of the San Francisco 49ers new stadium.
Edward Lake II, a truck driver with Gerdau Reinforcing Steel West, was crushed in October by a bundle of rebar that fell from his truck as it was being unloaded at the stadium site in Santa Clara. Lake was the second worker to die during construction of the roughly $1.2 billion stadium.
The State Division of Occupational Safety and Health says Gerdau failed to implement procedures to verify that truck drivers and other employees were in a safe position while trucks were being unloaded.
On Thursday, it issued three citations against the company totaling $36,750.
A call to Gerdau was not immediately returned.
