Prince George’s County officials have activated speed cameras at two dozen new locations near schools.
The new cameras are part of a program that began in September. They are operating between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and are activated when they detect a driver traveling 12 or more miles over the speed limit. The fine for a violation is $40.
WTOP-FM reports that in the first 40 days of the program, speeding in school zones where cameras were located was reduced by almost 50 percent.
The Maryland county has said it plans to have more cameras operating this year.
