A Lunenberg, Va., man has pleaded guilty to trying to fake his death to receive a $750,000 life insurance payment.
U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride says 38-year-old Jamie Dwayne Long pleaded guilty Monday to mail fraud.
Long bought the policy with Modern Woodmen of America in August 2010. The company received a call from someone claiming to be Long’s brother-in-law, who claimed Long died in a car accident. The caller asked that the paperwork to file the claim be sent to a post office box that had been opened by Long. Long attempted to order a vital records embosser for Prince Edward County so he could provide a death certificate, but Virginia State Police were notified instead.
He faces up to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced June 8.
