A District of Columbia man is charged with intentionally setting fire to his car in Maryland in an apparent case of insurance fraud.
The fire marshal’s office says Kevin Leon Dyer faces charges of second-degree arson and malicious burning with the intent to commit fraud.
Authorities say a 2010 Ford Focus belonging to Dyer was found destroyed by fire July 23 in the Indian Head Rail Trail parking lot in Charles County.
The fire marshal’s office says investigators determined the car was intentionally ignited and that Dyer had reported it stolen to D.C. police. Officials say Dyer bought the car for $14,000 and could not make his monthly payments.
Dyer is awaiting extradition from D.C. to Maryland to face charges. A phone listing for Dyer could not immediately be found.
