Narcotics Found in Des Moines Insurance Company Restroom

April 2, 2007

Police closed a downtown street last week after finding a suspicious powder in the restroom of an insurance company.

Police determined the powder, found in a small plastic bag, was an illegal drug.

“We tested it with our equipment and also with a narcotics test kit from the police department. Tested it for meth, cocaine and heroin and we did get a positive on a narcotic,” said Brian O’Keefe, spokesman for the Des Moines Fire Department.

Police and other emergency crews were called shortly after noon to ING after the bag was found in a men’s restroom on the second floor, O’Keefe said. He said it was found by an employee and turned over to security.

O’Keefe declined to identify the drug, saying it was turned over to police.

“No one was volunteered or came forward to claim their recreational drug,” he said.

No one was injured, and no employees were evacuated from the building. The area was isolated, and the street in front of the building was blocked for about an hour.
