Florida lawmakers have been frustrated trying to resolve insurance issues on many fronts in recent years. One of the most troublesome has been the growth of fraudulent claims for drivers who have personal injury protection insurance.
Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty told Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet on Tuesday that his office will work with the Legislature to try and find answers to a problem that costs insured Florida motorists, as well as some insurance companies, hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Florida drivers are required to carry PIP coverage.
McCarty said “fraudsters and hucksters” have escalated the problem with PIP fraud to the point where it has doubled policy costs for drivers in the last five years and threatens the viability of some companies doing business in the state.
