A north Florida public works employee was struck by a utility pole that snapped while he was clearing debris from Tropical Storm Debby.
Alachua County spokesman Mark Sexton says Emanuel Baker was clearing downed trees Monday in Micanopy. One tree got stuck on a power line and caused the pole to snap.
The pole fell on Baker’s head. Sexton says Baker has not regained consciousness and was in critical condition Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a Tampa Bay-area school district is plugging 125 roof leaks that sprung from Debby’s rains. Manatee County School District maintenance supervisor Bob Capdeville says all but three of the 39 buildings affected are schools.
In Collier County, officials say 80 percent of the sea turtle nests counted on their beaches were lost to Debby’s rains and high tides.
