Beaufort County, S.C., officials are asking a contractor to check fire sprinklers in every county building to see if they are similar to one that malfunctioned and soaked a library on Hilton Head Island.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that a photo of the sprinkler head inside the library appears to show it’s a 1997 model recalled about four years later because a rubber seal could corrode.
County spokeswoman Joy Nelson says the county is trying to verify if the sprinkler head was one that was recalled. If so, the county will then check every sprinkler head in the courthouse, sheriff’s office and other county offices and replace them.
The sprinkler system in the library malfunctioned Sept. 17, soaking thousands of books to be sold in a fundraiser.
