A Denver grand jury has indicted seven people on accusations that they took part in a sophisticated car and insurance theft ring dating back three years.
The Denver district attorney’s office says one of the cars reportedly stolen was a 1959 Cadillac convertible that was featured in the “MacGyver” television series and belonged to the late actor Steve McQueen.
According to the indictment, the ring’s members rented expensive cars, reported them stolen and changed the vehicle identification numbers before selling them to cohorts. The accomplices then insured the vehicles and reported them stolen a second time so they could obtain the insurance money.
Prosecutors allege the group stole more than $700,000 from car rental agencies, insurance firms and other victims.
